Sidney Hook Memorial Award

Established in 1991 in memory of the distinguished American philosopher Sidney Hook (1902-1989), who was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at City College of New York, this award recognizes national distinction by a single scholar in each of three endeavors — scholarship, undergraduate teaching and leadership in the cause of liberal arts education.

The award of $7,500 has been presented five times in conjunction with the meetings of the Council of Phi Beta Kappa. Funding for the award was made possible by a grant from the John Dewey Foundation.

2006	Charles Tilly, Joseph Buttenwieser Professor of Social Science at Columbia University
2003	Jonathan Spence, Sterling Professor of History at Yale University
2000	Natalie Zemon Davis, professor of history emerita at Princeton University
1997	Carolyn G. Heilbrun, professor of English literature emerita at Columbia University
1994	John Hope Franklin, James B. Duke Professor of History emeritus and professor of legal history in the Law School at Duke University
1991	Leon Lederman, former president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Frank L. Sulzberger Professor of Physics at the University of Chicag
